Abstract | The characterization of the ice in Tuktoyaktuk Harbour was undertaken as part of a field program to study the strength and fracture properties of salt water ice. The report presents data on the structure, the salinity and the temperature profile of the ice sheet. Photographs of thin sections and the various indentation tests are also included. The data shows that the ice was mainly composed of large to very large columnar grains. Results of salinity measurements also show that the ice tested was fresh water ice and not the expected salt water ice, likely due to the flow of the nearby MacKenzie River into the area. |
