Résumé | Soil erosion along the Rhine river system had silted up the harbours of Duisburg-Ruhrort to such an extent that dredging was contemplated. Because of the existence of high grade coal deposits beneath the harbour a careful mining operation was planned which would cause surface subsidence, making dredging unnecessary. In 1951 agreement was reached between the three parties, Hamborner Bergbau AG, the Navigable Waterways Authority of Munster and the Duisburg-Ruhrorter Hofen AG whereby the Westende Coal Mine would extract the coal. The mining company assumed the task of extracting the coal with sufficient care to provide clearly-defined subsidences, and keep damage to the many complex structures at a minimum. The harbour was kept operative during subsidences. The extraction target was fully reached in most areas. The mining operations under the harbours ended in 1968 when the coal supplies ran out. The harbour was successfully lowered by 2 metres. |
