Résumé | Laser cladding of high-performance material on cheap base material (or substrate) can not only extend automotive tooling life but also reduce their cost. In this paper, high vanadium CPM 9V tool steel was deposited on hardened H13 tool steel using Nd:YAG laser in order to improve wear resistance of the base material for potential automotive tooling applications. Post-cladding heat treatments were applied on the clad material to control its microstructures and mechanical properties. To gain a better understanding of laser clad CPM 9V material, X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscope (OM) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) were used to characterize the microstructures and their potential impact on mechanical performance of the clad. |
