Résumé | This report describes a resistance-calculating spreadsheet produced with equations from ICEPERF and the IOT Model Test Database. The resistance experienced by a vessel during icebreaking is a function of the vessel’s length, beam, draft and bow angles. These features are specific to each vessel and inputted by the user into the spreadsheet. The calculation of resistance also depends on various ice properties and the velocity of the vessel during icebreaking. Once all parameters are set, the sheet automatically calculates the resistance using both the ICEPERF and IOT Model Test Database methods. This sheet makes a comparison between the original resistance of each hull form and a scaled version of that form but using the same bow angles. This comparison was made for a Canadian Coast Guard project for which a comparison between six icebreakers was required. The sheet was produced for this comparison purpose but, with minor modifications, it can be expanded to include any icebreaker hull form. |
