Abstract | In this work, a three-dimensional finite element flow analysis code is used to study the flow behavior during gas/water assisted injection molding. Non-Newtonian, non-isothermal flow solutions are obtained by solving the momentum, continuity and energy equations. Two additional transport equations are solved for tracking polymer/air and gas(water)/polymer interfaces. Solutions are presented for the filling of test flow problems typical of the gas/water assisted injection applications. Flow features of interest include preferntial flow sections (flow leader) and changes in flow direction (corners or turns in a channel flow). Differences between the injection assisted by the gas and that assisted by the water are shown and the effect of different parameters such as the gas injection delay is illustrated. |
