AbstractFactors that control the various phases of building fires ( ignition and initial fire spread, pre-flashover fire growth, and fully developed fire) are examined together with the smoke problem that may be associated with any of them. Techniques for designing building elements that maintain prescribed levels of fire safety are discussed, and the role of psychological and sociological factors outlined.
