Abstract
The moisture degradation of plastics during outdoor exposure depends on the moisture regime at the plastic surface. Wet and dry periods and corresponding temperatures of grey PVC plastic surfaces, facing south at 5 degree, 45 degree, and 90 degree angles from the horizontal, were determined during the 1980 calendar year. The total wet time decreased with increasing exposure angle. The monthly percentage wet period varied from a low in June to a high in November. The number of wet-dry cycles during the year, median wet-dry cycles for different exposures, and monthly median wet-dry cycles were determined. Together with the monthly median- mean temperatures, this information can be used to develop an accelerated weathering test by permitting realistic simulation of outdoor moisture conditions.
