AbstractTwenty years' records of blockage of intake racks by frazil ice at power plants located on the Ottawa River were examined to define the weather conditions and heat losses under which frazil occurred. Marginal ice blockage took place when the rate of heat loss averaged about 30-40 cal/sq cm/hr for several hours preceding the time when frazil was reported. Ice blockage sufficient to shut down the generators occurred when the rate of heat loss was greater than about 40 cal/sq cm/hr for 12 hours or more. Almost all frazil problems occured during westerly or northwesterly flows of relatively dry air, with wind speeds averaging at least 2.25 to 4.5 m/s (5-10 mph).
