AbstractFrozen lakes are widely used for transportation purposes, and it is therefore important to determine the bearing capacity of the ice in relation to its properties. A project was undertaken to record some of the experiences of pulp and paper industry's use of ice covers for logging operations. Users were asked to fill out a record form giving relevant details wherever a vehicle or horse broke through the ice; a second record form asked for information about the maximum load that was successfully placed on the ice and the associated ice thickness and quality. Observations show that if thickness only is taken as a measure of bearing capacity and such factors as cracks and thermal stresses are neglected then ice failures can be expected to occur with single vehicles of total stress less than that defined by P=0.07h[2]. The number of observations were not sufficient to provide a basis for developing rules giving the dependence of the bearing capacity of an ice cover on thickness, quality, and other properties. Recording pertinent information for each failure should be continued and more details provided.
