AbstractSingle crystal freshwater ice samples have been crushed against an instrumented stainless steel platen capable of measuring pressure and temperature at the ice/platen interface. Samples were mounted on a thick plexiglass plate which permitted viewing the crushing zone through the clear specimens. The visual records and the pressure, temperature and load data indicate that pressure melting and heat generation by the viscous flow of the liquid plays a significant role in ice crushing.
