Abstract | Waterproofing of roofs with impermeable membranes based on bitumen modified with high modulus materials is now widely employed in Europe. The mechanical and viscoelastic behavior of bitumen, either at low or at high temperatures, are appreciably improved by addition of thermoplastic polymers such as styrene-butadiene-styrene rubbers and atactic polypropylene. Such materials can exhibit a complementary use but to obtain the optimum properties it is necessary that compatible bitumens be used and that a proper mixing of the bitumen and thermoplastic polymers be achieved. |
