Abstract | Architects like to design buildings with exposed steel columns. Whereas unfilled steel columns are quite vulnerable to fire, those filled with concrete can be quite fire-resistant. Just how fire-resistant depends on the concrete filling, which can be just plain concrete, steel-fibre concrete or bar-reinforced concrete. The plain-concrete-filled columns, according to design equations and a computer program, are the least fire-resistant of the three. But there are really too many variables involved to be so categorical. |
