AbstractVibration tests consisting of heel impacts by a person, shaker impacts, and random shaker excitations were carried out on an 8.5 x 8.8 m steel joist-concrete slab floor sample. Structural variations to the floor sample included restrained and free edge conditions, two concrete slab thicknesses, several joist stiffnesses, and transverse bracing of the steel joists. The lowest four to six natural frequencies, associated mode shapes and modal damping values were determined for various structural configurations. Modal damping of the floor sample was significantly increased by the presence of one or more person,s on the floor, whereas structural modifications had relatively little effect. Predicted and measured initial peak accelerations due to heel impact and fundamental floor frequencies were also compared.
