AbstractIn recent years, there has been a growing interest in the use of high-performing materials (HPM), such as high strength concrete (HSC), high performance steel and fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP), in civil engineering applications. These materials find extensive applications in infrastructure projects and, to a limited extent, in building applications. Further, the use of HPM materials infrastructure projects is becoming an absolute necessity for achieving a durable and cost-effective structure system. In the paper, the different conditions and complexities associated with characterising fires in infrastructure pojects will be explained. The fire resistance research needs for HPM, mainly HSC and FRP, will be outlined.
