AbstractChanges in building methods, the use of new materials and the rapid growth of high-rise building construction reinforce the need for fire prevention. A critical examination of the basic role of firewalls as barriers against the spread of fire points out the significance of the many openings in such walls to accommodate ducts, registers and grills, and the need to protect against the danger they present. The use of fire dampers, as described by NFPA Standard 90A, is usually required, but much remains to be done to develop improved criteria, better test methods and a greater variety of satisfactory devices. For a better understanding of the problems related to fires, a distinction must be clearly made between fire protection and smoke protection. Smoke is a growing danger in high-rise buildings. Studies of air circulation in buildings, which also deal with the stack effect, provide a clearer understanding of the various aspects of smoke movement and the means to implement effective preventive measures.
