AbstractThe toxicity of gases produced in combustion depends on the conditions under which combustion takes place. Heat and oxygen supplies are two major variables of which the latter has a more significant effect. In the fully developed stage of a fire, temperature is high and oxygen is depleted. It is difficult to simulate this condition in toxicity tests for fire gases. Although the present trend in toxicity testing is towards using animals, there are shortcomings in this approach. The analytical approach is complementary to it and has many advantages. The dynamic toxicity factor, a method of evaluating the toxicity of fire gases, based on an analytical approach, is presented in this paper by the author. This method considers the rate of toxic gas generation, in comparison with the toxicity factor, which considers the total toxicity.
