AbstractA thick weathered crust, extending to depths of 30 feet or more, has developed on most of the natural slopes in Leda clays in the Ottawa region. The initial stages of landslides in the clay slopes are confined to the crust. Below the surface layer the clays of the weathered crust contain a system of closely spaced fissures. When sheared, the weathered clay breaks down into small nodules which can be further broken down into a quasi-liquid when thoroughly remoulded. From the shear behaviour of this clay observed in the field and in the laboratory, a method of stability analysis has been developed which takes into account the strength properties of the fissured clay and changes in groundwater levels. The method has been checked for several slope failures.
