AbstractConsiderable research attention in recent years has focused on the possibility of using daylight to achieve a healthy lit environment, but it has been over a decade since the last substantive reviews of the state of the art. VELUX A/S recently commissioned NRC to conduct such a review, with a focus on residential buildings and with the aim of creating a research agenda to guide future work. This article is a brief summary of the outcome of this review. NRC identified three processes by which windows and skylights in homes might influence health and well-being: light dose, view, and architectural aesthetics. Windows and skylights also influence long-term sustainability, through which they indirectly will affect health and well-being of present and future generations. NRC is using the results to guide its own research directions and hopes others will also take up the topics outlined in the research agenda.
