AbstractFirst-year sea ice pressure ridges are modelled as two- dimensional wedges of a Mohr-Coulomb material and the passive stress distribution is obtained using a similarity solution and approximate polynomial forms of the dependent variable. Analysis gives the horizontal forces in ice covers associated with formation of floating pressure ridges and some cases of rubble pile-up against shores.
