AbstractThe need for adequate subsurface investigations to determine soil and permafrost conditions in this region cannot be overemphasized. Perennially frozen ground occurs as scattered small islands varying in areal extent from 20 ft. to several hundred ft. and in thickness from about 3 to 30 ft. or greater. Permafrost occurs from 18 inches to 7 ft. below the surface. Much ice, primarily in the form of horizontal lenses from hairline to 2 or 3 inches in thickness, is found throughout the frozen lacustrine soils underlying the area. Ground temperatures close to thawing ( 32 degrees F) indicate that the frozen ground is in a delicate state of thermal balance. The existence of permafrost in this area is greatly influenced by local climate and terrain features, but because of the complex interrelationships the occurrence and distribution of permafrost in not readily predictable. Engineering problems associated with construction in this fringe area of perennially frozen ground arise mainly because of the relatively unpredictable distribution of the permafrost " islands", the quantity of ice contained in the soils and the critical `near thawing' condition of the frozen ground. The information presented is derived from various sources. The authors carried out exploratory work which was supplemented by information obtained from boreholes and examination of the soils in service line trenches excavated as deep as 30 ft.
