AbstractThe new edition of the Canadian masonry design standard uses mortar-bedded area instead of net area in determining the load capacity of hollow block walls. The effective cross- sectional area of hollow blockwork with mortar on the face- shells only is thereby reduced, in turn reducing the load capacity if allowable stresses are based on existing tabular values. This has led to a review of the tabular values for compressive strength of concrete blockwork.
