AbstractAs a lecture at an architects' meeting the paper is a good introduction to the general problems faced in acoustical design in buildings, particularly the separation of noisy areas from quiet ones in dwelling construction. The paper deals with the transmission loss achievable by different types of construction of noise barriers, i.e. wall and floor- ceiling constructions, and the minimum requirements of the National Building Code (50 dB between adjacent dwelling units). The mass of the construction of the sound barrier plays a dominant role.
