| Abstract | Snow and ice are major factors in many activities of economic importance to Canada. It is not surprising, therefore, to find at least four committees of the National Research Council directly concerned with thesematerials. These committees consider problems such as the prediction of run-off from melting snow covers, the prediction of winter ice conditions in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the measurement of changes that occur inglaciers and how to keep highways and city streets clear of snow. By working together closely, they discharge their responsibilities with no needless duplication of effort. One ice problem that has received considerable attention in recent years is that of maintaining water areas that would normally freeze over free of ice for part or all of a winter. The Working Group on Ice in Navigable Waters of the Canadian Committee on oceanography and the Subcommittee on Snow and Ice of the Associate Committee on Soil and Snow Mechanics, two of the committees that are associated with the National Research Council, have given consideration to this problem. In response to demands for information, these committees sponsored jointly a conference on techniques for preventing ice formation on lakes, rivers and salt water areas. Invitations were extended to those actively engaged on this problem to present their experience and participate in the discussions. Through their contributions the conference successfully recorded and summarizes what is now known in Canada on methods for preventing the formation of ice covers. |
