AbstractVertical ground movements were investigated near a line of high elm trees growing in Leda clay soil, a marine deposit found extensively in the Ottawa St Lawrence Lowlands. The amplitude of these movements was found to be a function of depth, horizontal distance from trees, and seasonal weather conditions. Based on results obtained for the record dry year of 1955, a chart was prepared which could be used as a guide for the design of foundations near high elm trees in these clays. These ground movements were also related to " soil moisture depletion", a quantity computed from weather records. An analysis of the ground movements over a period ( 1954-57) was made and a method for computing them from weather records is given.
