AbstractEleven hundred eighty computer calculations have been performed to study the heat flow in fire through concrete masonry unit walls. They covered wide ranges of the four geometric variables, and four concretes which could be regarded as "limiting materials" in the normal weight and lightweight groups. It was possible to express the thermal fire endurances of the masonry units in dry condition with the aid of three empirical equations. These equations can be used to estimate the fire endurance from the geometric variables and material properties only in the case of concretes made with chemically stable aggregates. Their real usefulness lies in showing the way to economical design and, as extrapolation formulas, in extending test information to geometries and materials not covered by fire tests.
