AbstractThere are many points that have to be considered when seeking a successful solution for the design of a sealed joint. In this paper, the author tries to simplify this complex field. It is pointed out that the most important characteristic of a sealant is its movement capability. The principles applicable to joint design are discussed in the order they would be encountered in the design process. Only principles are discussed and no panacea can be offered.
