AbstractThe use of basement space in Swedish homes has changed recently and now the basement area is often used for recreation space. Greater consideration must now be given to moisture and heat insulation of external walls, as well as better ventilation and heating. Changes now introduced involve sloping the grade around the basement to achieve better water run-off, draining water from the roof directly into the storm sewer, and installing effective tile drainage around the footings. A layer of mineral wool on the outside wall forms an effective layer to break capillary action, as well as providing a thermal heat insulating layer and lowering the cost of backfill. Laboratory tests of full scale models have been carried out. Investigations have shown that theoretical advantages of the new type of structures are realised in practice. Compared with traditional basement walls the following advantages are noted: 1) the possibility of formulating designs for different moisture loads; 2) using mineral wool layers is a simple way of obtaining supplementary insulation; 3) backfill requirements can be reduced; and 4) greater protection is afforded against water penetration of cracks in the basement.
