AbstractAn extensive analytical study of the energy consumption of Canadian office buildings was commissioned by the National Research Council of Canada as part of an effort to establish energy budgets for buildings with various occupancies. The results show that climate and shape can be allowed for by means of simple formulae; that size is not important but height is because of its effect on infiltration. The effect of the period of occupancy needs to be studied further. Significant reductions can be made in the energy consumption of existing buildings without major capital expenditure.
