AbstractA knowledge of window air leakage characteristics is required both for the calculation of building heating and cooling loads and for the specification of windows. Factory-built units only were considered in this study since the majority of windows installed in new homes are of this type. This report gives the results of air leakage measurements made on 18 typical prebuilt Canadian residential horizontal sliding windows where major sources of leakage and methods of increasing window tightness were investigated. The air leakage results are compared with the performance criteria established for other types of window.
