AbstractAn important property in the solution of geothermal problems is the thermal conductivity of the ground. Data on conductivity of soils, particularly in permafrost areas, are extremely scarce owing in part to the fact that a relatively inexpensive and simple apparatus has not been available for measuring conductivity with confidence. This paper deals with the development of such an instrument for use in permafrost soils under both field and laboratory conditions. A series of tests has been carried out to calibrate the probe with the guarded hot plate using several granular materials.
