AbstractIn the event of a fire, smoke migrates from the fire floor to upper floors mainly through vertical shafts, such as stairwells and elevators. When the air-handling system is off, air ducts can also act as passageways for smoke. Exhausting air from a vertical shaft by natural or mechanical means during a fire, if adequate, eliminates the shaft as a vehicle for smoke spread but makes it untenable. If vertical shafts are pressurized, entry of smoke into them is prevented and they therefore provide a smoke-free escape route and the transfer of smoke from one floor to another is minimized. Areas designated as "refuge areas" can be kept tenable by pressurization with mechanical fans. By pressurizing the whole building and venting the fire floor to outside, smoke can be prevented from spreading into adjacent areas.
