Abstract
I. To obtain information with regard to the porous structure of hydrated cement and the extentof its interaction with water, sorption and length-change isotherms were determined for this material.Compacts of bottle-hydrated cement were brought to equilibrium in a high-vacuum systemat various humidities, and measurements of the changes in length and weight during this process,were made to draw the isotherms.II. In order that the hydrated-cement-water sorption may be adequately analysed, two thermodynamicprocesses connected with the material, encountered in adsorption, are discussed.Thc B.E.T. surface are computed by the use of a modified form of the Gibbs adsorptionequation, is found to be in close agreement with the value obtained by an experirnental method ofdetermining zero adsorbed water. The surface area calculated from the pore-size distribution is also inagreement with these values. It is found that over the range of vapour pressures from 0 t o 25% theGibbs adsorption and Bangham equations are obeyed.
