AbstractIn both the design and the calibration of a neutron moisture meter, the following assumptions are made; all other atoms present in soils have such a large mass when compared to hydrogen atoms that their role in reducing the energy of neutrons is negligible; the only reactions in which the neutrons are involved are mechanical; and the hydrogen atoms present in soils are only those chemically bonded to oxygen in the form of water. The design of a scintillation moisture meter, its calibration in the laboratory, and its subsequent field assessment are described. Those factors found to cause the discrepancy in instrument readings are also discussed.
