AbstractFor lung airways, the expiratory flow rate for a given lung volume cannot be increased beyond a certain level no matter how much extra load is applied to the lung surface by the chest wall and the diaphragm. For structurally weak or diseased lungs, the upper levels are usually lower. In earlier work, we found that when lungs are in this flow limited state, the airway walls vibrate.
