AbstractA review is given for our high-pressure vibrational spectroscopic studies on a wide range of biological systems from aqueous biomolecular assemblies to intact biological tissues and cells. Our work in this area has been focused on the study of structural and dynamic properties in model biomembranes, intermolecular interactions between various exogenous molecules and membrane lipids, pressure effects on the secondary and tertiary structure and hydrogen isotope exchange in proteins and polypeptides, hyperbaric manipulation of enzyme kinetics, protein aggregation and dissociation, and cell anomalies at the molecular level in various diseases including human cancers. These studies have been classified into five categories and examples from each category are given here for illustration.
