Preparation and properties of calcium silicate hydrate-polymer nanocomposite materials

AbstractA series of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H)-polymer nanocomposites (C-S-HPN) were prepared by incorporating a number of organic polymers into the inorganic layers of CSH during precipitation of quasicrystalline C-S-H from aqueous solution. The as-synthesized CSHPN materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-Transform infrared (FTIR)-Photoacustic, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and NMR spectroscopy. Results on the intermediate nanostructural organization reflecting both intercalation of polymers and exfoliation of the C-S-H structure will be highlighted using XRD, SEM and AFM data. A discussion on the effects of the material composition and polymer type and content on selected C-S-HPN morphology, thermal stability and mechanical properties will be presented. Potential applications of these nanocomposites will be discussed.
