Abstract | The experimental evaluation of yacht performance with model yachts has been carried out in two different ways over the last sixty years. The physical modelling of a sailing vessel sailing to windward with a wuasi-static balance between aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces has been carried out with either a free running model towed from a mast or with a captive model. In the former the physical modelling is perhaps more realistic, but it creates problems of measurement accuracy. In the later more precise measurements are possible even though the sailing condition is not rigorously modelled. The different approaches that have been used in each technique are reviewed and a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques are discussed. |
