Abstract | The placement of electrical outlet boxes made from metal in partition walls that separate units in a multi-family dwelling, can raise concerns regarding sound isolation. Outlet boxes made from plastic have no effect on sound isolation, no matter where in the wall they are placed relative to one another. With metallic electrical outlets, it does matter. In fact, the placement can make a difference of up to 6 STC points. Besides their strategic placement in a wall, it is also possible to treat these outlet boxes with sound-absorbing materials. This can help somewhat. Electrical outlet boxes decrease the fire resistance of partition walls. |
