Abstract | Organic matter, associated with the clays and heavy metal minerals present in the Athabasca Suncor Oil Sand Tailings has been recovered and then subjected to preferential dissociation by a series of acid treatments, followed by soxhlet extraction using benzene/methanol. The various fractions isolated have been studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravitmetry (DTG). Comparison of the data obtained in nitrogen with that obtained in air indicated the complex nature of the thermal degradation and thermal oxidative processes taking place on heating. The results indicate that TG is capable of providing information for the characterization of Oil Sand fractions which may contribute to an understanding of the refining process. |
