Abstract	The fire toxicity concept that has been proposed as a method to assess the toxicity of decomposition products from quantitative analytical data and the known toxicities of the products is explained. The assessment gives indications of the relative importance of toxic species produced from a given material, and the relative propensity of materials in generating harmful gases and vapours. Merits and limitations of the concept and directions for further development are discussed. Some experimental data developed under a standardized method of decomposition are presented.
