AbstractAlkali expansivity has been identified as the primary cause of deterioration of concrete structures in Canada. Potentially expansive aggregates have been found in numerous locations throughout the country. The paper describes the requirements and recommendations contained in the current CSA standards as they apply to the testing and use of aggregate, restrictions on alkali concentrations in portland cement and pozzolans, and the addition of limestone to portland cement. Case examples from each of seven regions across Canada are presented to show the effects of deterioration caused by alkali-expansivity.
