AbstractA research project is being conducted at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to evaluate the effectiveness in a road tunnel of the current emergency ventilation system (EVS) to control smoke spread in the event of a fire. The research study includes two phases: namely, a numerical and an experimental phase. The numerical phase uses the Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS)[1] Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to study smoke ventilation in the tunnel. The experimental phase is used to calibrate and partially verify the CFD model and to provide the necessary initial and boundary conditions.
