Abstract
A two-dimensional analytical method to determine frost load in a trench due to differential frost heave is presented. The model takes into account various factors such as frozen and unfrozen soil properties and trench geometry. Sensitivity analyses have been carried out to determine the importance of various variables on the development of frost load. Earth pressures measured at a site in Gatineau, Quebec, during two consecutive winters between 1994 and 1996 are compared with frost loads predicted using the model. Reasonable agreement is obtained between the changes in measured earth pressures during the winter months and predictions determined from the proposed model.
