AbstractThe structural performance of conventional joist-and-rafter and trussed roof frames was studied by full-scale loading tests. It was found that conventional roof frames built in earlier years had extremely variable load carrying capacities. Therefore improved nailing requirements were introduced in the National Building Code of Canada for conventional frames. For trusses new criteria for acceptable performance were formulated based on a comparison with the best conventional frames. These criteria are more liberal than would be the case under standard "engineering design" methods used in commercial and public buildings. Factors affecting the strength, stiffness and long-term performance of trusses are discussed. A number of standard designs for nailed trusses of commonly used spans and slopes are also given.
