Reducing noise to improve throughput

AbstractThis report gives a general overview about networking and the different aspects involved. Networking arose out of a need for faster transfer of information between people in a company. Before networks information was transferred through means of printing multiple copies or copying on diskette for the person or very least by word of mouth. Networks use a variety of devices for transferring information or data around the network with some devices being faster than others depending on the traffic on the network. These devices include hubs, bridges, routers and switches. For this report there were tests run on the network using various combinations of hubs and switches to see what difference could be made in reducing congestion while improving throughput on the network. The tests were run using a 100 Mb file and the timings recorded that it took for the file to be transferred between the two computers. Throughput was improved and congestion reduced by moving the VAXes from a hub to a switch and splitting the PC stack.
