AbstractA mile-long line of piezometers were installed at various depths in a clay terrace system east of the City of Ottawa. Measurements indicated a significant downward piezometric gradient through the clay layer to the underlying bedrock. The downward flow of water through the clay affects both existing effective stresses and the stress history of the clay deposit.
