Abstract | The objective of the present study was to acquire a good knowledge of influencing factors such as overlap length, substrate and adhesive thicknesses and adherend’s plastic deformation when using ductile or brittle adhesives. Similar studies have already been reported by de Silva et al. who used different adhesives for bonding steel adherends of various thicknesses [4] and [5]. In the present study, the influence of adhesive hardness and thickness, adherend thickness and overlap length were investigated through a set of mechanical tests on SLS joints made of aluminum substrates bonded by two commercial relatively brittle and ductile adhesives. For better distinction, the effects of plastic deformation in adherends were investigated by using DLS joints. Two optimization techniques, namely tapered adherends and bi-adhesive joints, were also implemented in order to reduce the effects of peel stresses acting in overlap ends of SLS joints. From design standpoint, this type of results may help engineers to make more efficient adhesive joints and also to take influencing parameters into account when extending experimental test results to other practical applications in which the joint geometries are not necessarily similar. |
