AbstractA hydraulic fracture apparatus incorporating a pressure transducer was developed for measuring the in situ minimum principal effective stress with open standpipe piezometers. Tests carried out at an instrumented test fill on marine clay adequately measured the K[o] of the foundation soil and the minimum principal effective stress beneath the embankment. The use of viscous aqueous solutions in the piezometer improved the test in permeable silty soils.
