| Abstract | Heat flow meter and calorimeter measurements have been used in investigating factors that influence in situ thermal resistance measurements on wood frame walls: wall orientation, length of measurement period, thermal lag, mean temperature effects and time of measurement. They have also been used to determine the installed resistance of insulation and the effect of framing members on the resistance of the whole wall. Knowledge of the dynamic effects of a test wall is essential in obtaining accurate results. Accurate thermal resistance measurements were obtained for wood frame walls from 24 h integrated values of heat flow and temperature difference (appropriate adjustments were made for time lag and mean temperature effects). Other measurement strategies produced less accurate (but acceptable) or completely unacceptable results. |
