AbstractThe buildings considered are assumed to conform to a building code such as the National Building Code of Canada being, for example, adequately compartmented. It is suggested that a criterion for the tenability of an atmosphere might be that its optical density per metre should not exceed some value between 0.05 and 0.l. A calculation of the amount of material needed to smoke-log a building is quoted. The objective of the smoke control measures developed by DBR is described. Some general approaches to the problems created by shafts are reported. The effects of lowering shaft pressures by top venting and of raising them by bottom venting and air injection are discussed. Finally the merits of dispersing smoke by dilution, particularly in warm weather, are debated.
